Treatment for Hammertoe Deformity & Pain

Hammertoes are toe deformities that cause one or more toes to bend or contract at the joint, giving them a curled or claw-like appearance. The condition often begins as flexible but can become rigid over time if left untreated. As hammertoes progress, pressure points may develop, leading to painful corns on the tops of the toes or calluses on the ball of the foot.

Many people experience discomfort when wearing tight or narrow shoes, but hammertoes can eventually cause pain in any type of footwear. Symptoms may include pain at the tip or top of the toe, redness, irritation, or, in more advanced cases, skin breakdown or ulceration.

What Causes Hammertoes?

While poorly fitting shoes can worsen symptoms, hammertoes are usually caused by underlying structural issues. Common causes include inherited foot structure, previous injury, and muscle or tendon imbalance. Certain medical conditions, such as arthritis, may also contribute to the development of hammertoes.

Treatment Options for Hammertoes

If hammertoes are causing pain or interfering with daily activities, evaluation by a podiatrist is the first step. At Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center, our doctors perform a thorough foot and ankle examination, assess footwear, and may use X-rays to determine the severity of the deformity.

Conservative treatment is often effective, especially in the early stages. Options may include footwear modification, protective padding or cushions, custom orthotic inserts, and routine care of corns and calluses. When conservative treatments no longer provide relief, surgical correction may be recommended to realign the toe and restore comfort.

If hammertoe pain is limiting your mobility or quality of life, the foot doctors at Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center are here to help you find the right solution and get you back on your feet comfortably.
