Safe and Effective Treatment for Plantar and Foot Warts

Warts on the feet can be uncomfortable, frustrating, and sometimes painful—especially when they appear on the bottom of the foot. Everyday activities like walking, standing, or wearing shoes can make symptoms worse if the wart is left untreated.

The good news is that foot warts are common and very treatable. At Raleigh Foot & Ankle Center, our podiatrists diagnose and treat warts regularly and can help relieve discomfort while preventing the wart from spreading or returning.

What Are Foot Warts?

Warts, also called verrucae, are caused by a virus that enters the skin through tiny openings, often too small to see. On the bottom of the foot, these are known as plantar warts. Pressure from walking can cause them to grow inward, flatten, and become painful. Small black dots may be visible within the wart and are a common sign of infection.

Where Do Warts Come From?

Warts are contracted from the environment and spread through direct contact. Children and teens are more likely to develop warts because their immune systems are still developing. Adults with weakened immune systems are also at higher risk.

Should Warts Be Treated?

Some warts may eventually go away on their own, but many persist for months or even years. When warts become painful, grow larger, or interfere with daily activity, treatment is recommended. Attempting to treat warts at home can damage healthy skin and may make the problem worse.

Treatment Options

Our doctors will examine the wart and recommend the most effective treatment based on its size, location, and severity. Treatment options may include:

  • Medical-grade topical treatments
  • Prescription acid therapies
  • In-office procedures to remove the wart
  • Other targeted therapies as needed

Most treatments are performed right in our office and are well tolerated.
